We definitely timed our visit just right as when we returned a couple weeks later, there was only a few flowers left on the tree. It really wasn’t that beautiful anymore — physical beauty is such a fleeting thing!
Durban Botanical Garden
We’re definitely not in Dubai! Vishnu, our tour guide driving us around the gardens in a golf cart, took us to the Kissing Tree.
The loneliest male in the world—there are no females of this tree left in the world. The gardens have grafted another male but now there’s two lonely males.

The “walking” trees from Avatar
Red Butler birds—the males are red only a couple months during mating season then they turn brown. Our visit to the Gardens was perfectly timed.
The locals throw one person at a time over the fence to harvest the Jackfruit. They pick as much as they can carry and toss the fruits back over the fence and then send the next guy to grab as much as he can carry. It is illegal of course, and when they get caught, they sacrifice the one last person. He has to pay the 100 Rand fine. They sell them at market.
